As a dog owner, you want to be sure that you establish a healthy and happy relationship with your new friend. A great deal of understanding how to do can be keys to enjoying your pet. So we’re going to discuss a few ‘must know’ tips  to help you and your canine companion work on building a a wonderful relationship

Vet Visits

First of all, you are going to have to visit a veterinarian sometimes. That is a given. Your new dog will need vaccinations, checkups and he might get sick sometimes. Due to the ever increasing costs of treatment, you may want to check into pet insurance.. The cost depends on what procedures or treatment your dog needs. The main thing is to realize that you will have to spend money on your pet for his care. So find out what you can expect to spend every six months on vet bills, vaccinations, flea control products, etc.

Another tip when it comes to the vet is to familiarize you dog with the vet when they are young so that every trip is not a trauma.  Just like people, dogs are not going to like to be poked and prodded so make sure every trip in not a ‘problem’ trip.  Regular check-up by a caring and compassionate vet don’t generally offer too much upset.  Try to combine your vet visits with something fun, like a trip to the park or a pet store afterwards whenever possible so they remember the fun and it’s not so scary for them.

Dixie - first corneal transplant dog in USSinisa Grozdanic an assistant professor of Veterinary Clinical Sciences performed the surgery that restored sight to 7-year-old Dixie, a Mountain Cur breed owned by Brett Williams of Runnells.

“We are excited for Dixie,” said Grozdanic. “She was our patient for such a long time and nothing really worked. She was gradually going down visually and we were finally able to do something to definitely improve her quality of life.”

“She is my pet and my friend,” said Williams. “She is the best dog I’ve ever had. Even when she was almost blind, she was still my best dog.”

Dixie, who had gained weight due to inactivity from her blindness, has lost seven pounds since the surgery.

“She used to walk right behind me when we’d go for a walk. She couldn’t see and was scared,” said Williams. “Now she wants to run ahead.”

Dixie’s sight was restored through a two-step surgical procedure that involves cutting into the eye to take out the cloudy cornea and inserting a permanent, plastic cornea. The new cornea is sutured, or stitched, into place. The entire eye including the new, plastic cornea is then covered with tissue from the dog to help the eye heal from the surgery. Because of the tissue and the bandages, the dog cannot see after this procedure.

Joseph Trujillo

Update - 6/20/08 - Joseph B. Trujillo Sentenced - See below

Joseph Trujillo was a real big, bad man last November when he took his mother-in-law’s little Chihuahua, Chicolin, into an alley and beat it to death with a shovel then tossed its battered and broken body into a trash dumpster.

Chicolin, a five year old stray Chihuahua that Elaine Ulibarri took in when he wandered into her yard was by all accounts a feisty little dog but was well loved as were all the dogs that Ulibarri had.

“He was a little orphan who wandered into my yard,” she tearfully testified. “I took him in. I really miss that little dog.”

On that fateful November 4th, Trujillo, whose wife said didn’t like the little dog, grabbed him by the scruff of the neck, took him out to the ally where a neighbor actually saw him bash the dog on the head four or five time.

At the time of Trujillo’s arrest, Eric Bernal, was going to report the incident anonymously but when Trujillo continued to claim he was being falsely accused, Bernel decided he would testify in court.

“I know he’s lying because I watched him do it,” Eric Bernal said. “I actually saw him carrying the dog to back by the scruff of the neck. The dog was yelping or screaming. It was really disturbing.”

Trujillo’s wife Carla testified that he didn’t like the dog, that once when it defecated in the basement of the house they shard with her mother, he took the dog’s feces and mixed it in with food and fed it to the dogs.
