DeShawn BrownFor all their posturing and protesting of their client’s innocence, the jury didn’t take long to proclaim DeShawn Brown GUILTY in the torture abuse case of ‘Mercy,’ as the 10 month old pit bull was dubbed by rescuers.

Although defense attorney Dan Wyde continued to protest DeShawn Brown’s innocence, the evidence piled up. Witnesses who saw him with a knife then saw the dog cut and bloodied, witnesses who tried to douse the flames engulfing the poor dog then seeing this monster with a gas can. Guess he won’t be laughing now!

Brown faces up to 10 years in prison. The penaltyMercy phase of the case will begin tomorrow.

I am ecstatic that justice has prevailed in this case and that the jurors saw through the games the defense put on as their case. Now if we can get a serious sentence I will really say that justice has prevailed!! This needs to standout as a landmark case when it comes to animal abuse!! People have got to start taking animal abuse more seriously. People who do this are a very serious danger to society and the only answer is to remove them from society!!

This is a message that was posted by Cathy from Operation Kindness;

Justice for Mercy has come! In less that one hour of deliberation, the jury came back this afternoon with a unanimous guilty verdict.

All of us at Operation Kindness are pleased and delighted. This was the outcome we hoped and prayed for. Mercy can now rest in peace. Today was justice for Mercy and all the abused animals she represents. Caring people around the world have been watching and waiting since Mercy died. We are very proud of the State of Texas and its citizens who have spoken with this verdict: open season ..less animals is over. We now hope for the maximum ten year sentence to complete the justice received today.

The sentencing phase begins tomorrow at 9am.

On behalf of Mercy, THANK YOU to all of you the world over who have sent us your prayers and concerns, telephoned us and sent emails and letters of support - we appreciate it so much.

Together we can Animal Abuse…For Mercy’s Sake

Justice won’t come until this scum bag is put behind bars for many many years.

The correct punishment for him was written by him. He should received burns over 60% of his body, have his ears burned, etc. And if he lives beyond 10 days or so, the state could give him the final push with, oh, a baseball bat, starting at his toes.

yes please give this guy the 10 years he deserves it for what he has done some one needs to look out for all the animals in the world thank you to the jury and hope the judge does the right thing

Someone should go after him with a knife, pour gasoline on him, set him on fire…wonder how much he would like that.

Thank God Mercy is resting in peace now, but the poor little puppy had to suffer senselessly because of this s.o.b.

The laws have got to be stronger to protect our precious animals…they can’t fend for themselves. I am so glad the law came through on behalf of Mercy… Hopefully DeShawn has a long, miserable jail term.

Yes, I believe in “an eye for an eye” theory.

This piece of crap better receive the 10 years he deserves and that is even too lenient. I believe in an eye for an eye too. I wish that could be the case here. That picture of him with that smirk on his face makes my blood boil. Bet he won’t be smiling in prison. I hope the other prisoners torture him senselessly. Sorry, I am not a mean person but what he did to Mercy is just beyond words.

the smug, laughing, mug shot says it all…..you know he would do the same to a child or elderly person…probably would not take on a man his own size….man to man…..someone like him will pick on the defenseless….hope i get to see what the Good Lord above has in store for the likes of this..

This man is dangerous to animals and to people. He exhibits characteristics of sociopathic behavior: lack of empathy, inability to “feel with” his victims, no compassion or remorse. We have treatment programs that work with this kind of manipulative personality. He is capable of “acting” as if he has learned compassion, empathy, etc. to get out of prison, jail or to gain parole. This makes him particularly dangerous. Any person who would do this to a dog who has done no harm (animals are innocent) to any living being is going to do the same to human beings if he isn’t already. He should not have to “wait” for death to learn consequences of his actions. He must be put away for the safety of all animals and people who might come in contact with him. Yes, try treatment programs on him, but do not allow this man to be parolled. If I had my way, this serial killer in the making would receive life in prison before he moves on to human beings.

It is about time that lawmakers start imposing the maxium sentences for animal abusers as that is not where it stops, once the abuser gets away with it the abuse will continue. This man should have to serve all 10 years of his sentence with no time off for good behavior! I agree with comments above he should never get out of prison because who knows will a child be his next target?

  9. by Patricia Hisey, on September 29 2007 @ 7:48 am

Well he only got 4 short years and a $5,000 fine. NOT LONG ENOUGH!!!!! I cannot believe he only got 4 years. Look at his smug face! 4 years is not long enough to teach this scum bag a lesson. I am just sick about this.

[...] DeShawn Brown, the sick, twisted cretin convicted of inflicting such a horrific torturous death on Mercy, a small 10 month old puppy, was sentenced to only 4 years in prison for his guilt. [...]

What is wrong with our justice system?? I mean what was this judge thinking? I guess he wasnt thinking about his family or grandchildren who could come in contact with this sociopath or anyone else’s either. We have to start doing a better job of electing our judges and other officials if we really want to get the results we want and these criminals deserve. Is this Judge up for re-election? And rehabilitation? These kinds of people cant be rehablitated. They have no feelings or conscience and no amount of therapy is going to make them get one. Unless we want this world to be taken over by criminals of all kinds, we really need to step up people and elect the right people, the people who will hand out the hard justice needed and let them know in no uncertain terms that we put themin office and we can take them out if they dont do thier jobs. And I agree with others that these kinds of people only start with torturing animals and then it goes on to small children or the elderly or you or me. It doesnt stop when they get out of jail, it just escalates.

ALL WE CAN HOPE FOR NOW IS THAT FOUR YEARS WILL BE ENOUGH FOR HIM ……ONCE HE COMES IN CONTACT WITH THE MURDERS, RAPISTS, THIEVES, AND ABUSERS…..WHO LOVE ANIMALS…AND THERE ARE MANY OF THOSE WHO ARE INCARCERATED…AND THEN JUST LET HUMAN NATURE TAKE IT’S COURSE……

  13. by roseanna, on September 29 2007 @ 9:51 am

I HAVE BEEN SENDING MUCH OF THIS INFO AND OTHER INFO ON JUDGES WHO DO NOT GIVE PROPER SENTENCING TO THESE HORRIBLE PEOPLE…..TO BILL O’REILLY…HE SPEAKS FOR THE CHILDREN WHEN THEIR ABUSERS ARE LET OFF AND I AM HOPING TO GET HIM TO HELP HERE TOO….MAYBE OTHERS COULD CONTACT HIM AS WELL AND OTHER MEDIA PEOPLE WITH A VOICE…AND A MAJOR AUDIENCE. THANKS SO MUCH…

It is unfortunate that the jury decided on only a 4 year jail term. BUT at least he will have to serve some time in prison. He also now has a felony on his record. The sentence was NOT the judge’s decision, he only approved what the JURY decided. As far as I know, Brown is the first abuser convicted under the new, tougher, animal abuse statutes. BUT if the quote from his fiancée is true: watch out Phoenix, they’re gonna be your problem in a few years.

“Mr. Brown’s fiancée, Megan Byrne, who said she was once a drug dealer, testified during Friday’s sentencing phase that the couple planned to start over in Phoenix if he was given probation.” quoted from Dallas Morning News

  15. by Patricia Hisey, on September 29 2007 @ 9:11 pm

This sicko had a fiancee? Who would want to stay with someone capable of that? My God, can you imagine that he could be a father someday? And I agree with Candee, these people cannot be rehabbed. They lack compassion and empathy.

  16. by Barb, on October 1 2007 @ 2:06 pm

I attended the trial here in Dallas. The jury only deliberated for approx 45 minutes then returned with a unamious guilty.
I thought that was a strong sign that Friday when the sentencing phase started he would get the full 10 years/
Friday was a day of character witness, if you want to call them that, his fiancee, then his step brother and of
course his mother all seemed like really stand up people that I would want to have around me…NOT! The fiancee ( Megan Byrn) is/was a drug dealer she says she changed her ways (right!) and DeShawn has a criminal resume starting in 2002 all the way up to May 2007 where he was arrested in Denton Texas for DWI (has not been convicted) for going up a one way street with 3 other teens in the car with him. But according to Megan Byrn his fiancee….these were all mistakes just like when the two of them got caught with pills and drug weighing machines a gun and two pit bulls in a hotel room. ALL mistakes.

There was not one thing presented on Friday that made me believe he intends to get his life straight therefor I was very sad
about him only getting 4 years up for parole in 2. With that said after watching all about him there is no way he’s going to get out in two years, he’s a thug and he will get in there and get into trouble just like he did in the real world.

So I hope he does get into trouble thus having to serve the 4 years. It’s a small step forward and I do find joy in knowing that
he has to serve a sentence and got time for something he thought had no value at all. I also hope human nature does take it’s course while he’s in prison. What he did to Mercy was heinous, rest her soul at least there was some justice for Mercy.

I would challenge everyone to stand up and speak for the animals in your community. We are their only chance!!!
I also applaud the witness that came forward in the Mercy case that has to be hard and so many times the witness
back out so without them coming forward and speaking DeShawn probably would have walked off free!
