Salmonella Infection In Humans Linked to Dog Food

Looks like Mars Petcare is still in the doghouse as salmonella from their contaminated dog food is linked to salmonella infections in humans.
An outbreak of 66 salmonella infections in humans across 18 states, including 25 cases in Pennsylvania, since early 2006 has been linked to two brands of dog food produced in an Everson, Fayette County, plant.
No one has died, and no pet illnesses or deaths have been reported, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Yesterday the CDC announced it is continuing to collaborate with health officials in Pennsylvania and the other states and with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate the infections involving the strain of Salmonella Schwarzengrund. One case linked to the outbreak was reported in Allegheny County in June 2006.
Mars Petcare, based in Franklin, Tenn., voluntarily recalled its Red Flannel Large Breed Formula in 50-pound bags and Krasdale Gravy dry dog food in 5-pound bags Aug. 21. Its Everson plant is closed for inspection and cleaning, the company said in a news release Monday.
The company said the two dog food products were being recalled “out of an abundance of caution.”
For more information about the recall, see www.marspetcare.com or call 1-866-298-8332. A Q&A about the recall can be found on the FDA’s Web site at www.fda.gov/cvm/MarsPetCareQnA.htm. (Post Gazette)

Another reason for the government to step up and do something about the lack of food controll the FDA has.
