Woman Starved Dog Because ‘She Never Wanted it Anyway’

Jekea R. Vickers, 29, of 608 Bethune Drive in FL figured since she didn’t want the dog anyway, so why bother to care for it and she didn’t
This dog, dubbed Miss Ginny by her rescuers, was found dumped in a small wooden crate. Looking like a skin covered skeleton, surrounded by urine and feces, without water or food, she weighted only 21 lbs, less than half her normal weight.
When she was found, there was no movement, no detectable pulse or blood pressure, no signs of life in this poor dog, until she moved her eyes. This tiny movement prompted a
Hillsborough County Animal Services investigator to rush the dog to an emergency vet clinic.
Vickers told police that the dog belonged to her live-in boyfriend who was in jail and that she never wanted the dog anyway. She says she didn’t do anything wrong because she called animal control about two months ago and told them to come and get it.
But that’s not the way things work.
“We are not a delivery service,” Animal Services spokeswoman Marti Ryan said. “She has to come and bring it to us. It’s her property and she knew it.”
Vickers was arrested on one felony count of animal cruelty by starvation and a misdemeanor of improper confinement of an animal without food or water and released from Orient Road Jail later the same day after posting a $2,500 bond.
Mizz Ginny, named after on of her rescuers, was placed on intravenous fluids until she’s strong enough to take water and soft food on her own. So far she is reacting positively to treatment and shows no aggression. Her survival is still not a definite thing, on top of being severely emaciated, she’s also heartworm positive.
Heartworm treatment is costly and can be dangerous, especially to a dog is as weakened condition as Mizz Ginny is. Until she’s healthier, she’ll have to wait for treatment. The cost of treatment is also often a deterrent to adoption.
If Mizz Ginny recovers, they’ll look for a rescue group to take her in.

What is with these people that want to that … to lazy to take the dog to the spca nor look for someone that might want the pup. Wonder what they would do with their kids if they didn’t want them. This case is like one here where I’m from the people didn’t want the dog so the starved it gee you kow the dog come up missing one evening and is now nice and healthly. Yep I took it and placed it with my sister so the dog could have a good life. She worked to get the dog back to health and is now a very loving sweet heart. I’m just lost at what this world is coming to these days ….. these people have no soul nor heart makes one wonder how they were brought up….

Last year there was a woman who abandoned her white shepherd in a crate and moved out - 3 miles away. The dog starved to death with a bag of dog food sitting next to it. The dogs name was Ella and the woman is Christine Dawn Abrams. You can google her name to read the news reports.
The state of the world scares me to death.

Katrina, I applaud you!! Too often these stories only have sad endings but you gave this one dog a new chance at a wonderful life… Kudos! Thank you for sharing that.
AIR, yes, I’m quite familiar with that story
Stupid, selfish, heartless…. ok, time to stop before I really get into a rant!
As for this one, we can only hope she gets what coming to her. They never really do but we can still hope!

So horrible and sad…..I can’t believe people can be so cruel and not even feel any sorrow or guilt for what they have done…..people like this don’t deserve to live a happy life….they should live a life behind bars!!!
Puppy hugs and licks to you Mizz Ginny….everyday you should feel better and better….stronger and stronger and your pain will fade away….you WILL find a loving forever home!!! My paws are crossed!!

So, uh, what about this boyfriend? Were there typoes in the article? Were they still together or what? Did he leave the dog in her home knowing she didn’t agree to take care of her? Why wasn’t he charged with anything? Why only the female?
Just because you’re someone’s girlfriend does not mean all of your boyfriend’s property is your property and your responsibility.
I had this really crazy situation where someone my family knew was high on drugs and hysterical, and dragged her two cats out of her home to dump them on our doorstep. One escaped and she didn’t even notice. The other was left on the walkway outside our front door. She KNEW that we could not care for another cat, did not want another cat, and certainly didn’t want to clean up after her irresponsibility. Animal Control said it is NOT animal abandonment because she knew who we are and put the cat near our home. Because of this, they refused to pick up the cat, and told us to bring the cat in when they were open. Great, so I can buy a bunch of puppies and kittens, then set them loose on or in front of the properties of people I know, and now it’s legally their responsibility? Good luck trying to convince them all.
We didn’t want to leave the poor cat outside so we hid her in our place overnight, then dropped her off at the only “local” shelter that was open that day, a kill shelter far away that we had to take public transportation to. It made me feel terrible. On top of that, the shelter employee put on the form that she was a “surrender” that I “had no time for” or something like that.
I don’t want people to be calling me an animal abuser who leaves my cats to die in shelters because I got them and then figured I have no time for them. She was NOT my cat.
Obviously, whether she was my cat or not, if I stuck her in a wooden crate, locked the door, and left her to die, that would be animal cruelty. But wanting animal control to pick up someone else’s dog? That’s the part I find funny. AC was being lazy and blaming the other person, and they know it. And what exactly would they be “delivering” if they picked the dog up?
